GXT does bring in an even higher level of abstraction with many useful libraries which with GWT you would have to build from scratch. I must say, it also has a very nice looking interface!
With regards to the migration to handlers, I'm not sure what their strategy is going to be, but it's likely they will also move to handlers in order to facilitate adoption of GXT, especially by people new to GWT. Otherwise people would get used to using Handlers and when they move to GXT they would need to learn a new paradigm, listeners. Only time will tell I guess.
